I think these problems come and go like the tide. There will always be those people who thrive on disruption. Any attempts to fight this in earnest will likely be met by more determined methods of the perpetrators. As we've often seen, if you ignore them and take away their fun, they'll go away. If they come back, just rinse and repeat.

people have the right to make childish comments if they wish just the same as you have the right to state your opinion.

I like Jim F's idea about a sort of "community policing" strategy. If enough individual users vote a comment down, it is removed. Hmm, it might work.

Sometimes we get e-mails informing us of super inappropriate comments. Really bad words are automatically filtered and need approval. (The "F" word is most popular).

We want to censor as little as possible, of course. Otherwise, what's the use of speaking up?

I agree that it shouldn't be censored too much, but I think my issue is that someone else can take the name I use for posting and make statements about my character or about issues that do not represent my opinion. The comment section asks for my email address and I do not want to be misrepresented. That is the issue I have. I'm not as concerned about what people have to say when using their own name, but not when they are using mine. They've even used my husbands. That's the problem I'd like to see solved, so we can continue to state our opinions.

I thought this was the Tracy Press....not the New York Times. The website I'm sure doesn't get that many comments. So it really shouldn't be that difficult to monitor rude comments, etc.

Post edited by: joedawgsteel, at: 2007/08/15 09:36
