How long do we have to continue to witness disappointing football losses against simple offenses at Tracy High? Lets look at the facts.
Defense
For the past two weeks we have witnessed two Power I/option formations run over our 3-4 defense when it counted. How can we expect to contain or stop this formation with no pentration by 3 down linemen and lack of containment off tackle? A 4-3 over under defense is totally more condusive for this type of offense. The only way to stop the Pwr I/option is by penetrating the gaps and attacking from the weak side or bringing up the strong safety in a 46 defense. Does the fact that West is running a 4-3 say anything? For this level of play, our down linemen would have to have much more physical weight and strength ability than they currently have shown. Not to say that our athletes don't have the strength of heart to play. How many times did West send someone in motion as a lead blocker and no one shifted to counter? Our defense has and will continue to be totally outmanned and out of position as long as we stay in a 3-4 defense. Granted maybe we will face a spread offense soon. However our game plan should be to counter the offense and adopt the right defense to match it.

Offense: Our offense continues running the sweep and misdirection plays as well as short passing game. This is not moving the chains. Why is almost every major Texas high school running the Spread Option Zone Read offense? This spreads the defense out and causes weaknesses all over the field. Our tailback would be breaking longer runs as well as opening up mismatches on the weak side by sending wideouts in motion to the strong side of the field giving you a man for man mismatch on the weakside for either the quarterback keep or tailback. Our quarterback has a great arm. But if we aren't throwing north south, we will have the best punting team in the league as witnessed against West.

Special Teams: The fact that we recently purchased a kicking net shows that we are trying to bring it. However our kicker should be kicking more on the side line than witnessed last night. Field goal misses and miscues shows lack of preparation. Punting game however will continue to improve due to number of punts per game. We have to move the chains.

Until the offensive and defensive schemes are addressed, our kids will continue to be let down. We have great athletes. Let's try putting them in the right position to WIN.
