maybenotdumBcommenT / Dave Hardesty?,

Even for a resident's own private property, I would still recommend that residents check with the city to verify that any sign they see on their private property is in fact illegal. We do have easements.

I just read the city codes and residents should never touch a sign on property they do not own without getting it in writing from the City of Tracy that they can remove explicit types of signs posted on public property and for how long.

I read a few months ago where we have some volunteers who work with the City of Tracy to remove specific types of signs. And so if you want to get involved I would suggest approaching the city and seeing if you can work these volunteers and within the written guidelines that I am hoping that have been given by the city.

And so if you want to get involved with removing potentially illegal signs, please go to the City of Tracy and get it in writing that you can do something, and have them explicitly list out what types of signs you can remove, when you can do so, and on what streets and areas. Have them tell you what is public property versus private property.

If a sign is on private property that you do not own then I would strongly recommend not touching the sign even if it is illegal. Rather instead file a complaint with the City of Tracy, and if it doesn't get fixed within 6 months then write the Tracy Press. Don't trespass or do something that may cause you problems.

Post edited by: Chris Smith, at: 2008/03/09 06:23

Chris - What action has been taken in response to past complaints? The sign posting scofflaws put em up on Friday and take them down on Sunday. They are illegal signs and is there a possibility that the city can proactively warn furniture stores and car dealerships, etc. to this illegal activity and the possible penalties?

JimF,

For those particular signs, I would start taking digital pictures of the signs and email them to the City of Tracy. Clearly show where they are posted relative to the street and sidewalk, and state when they are posted, and ask them if they can send a letter to the store responsible for the signs. From my past experiences with DES, they probably will send the letters.

Post edited by: Chris Smith, at: 2008/03/09 07:07

Chris Smith,

The only signs the city puts on private property are stop signs, street signs and maybe directional signs. They do not put up advertising signs, therefore if one is in your yard without your permission you have a right to take it off. You do not have to call the city if an advertising sign or garage sale sign is on your property.

Private businesses should not put up signs on city easements.

There presently no volunteers for taking down signs for the city so that is a good idea if you want to take down signs.

Usually those furniture stores will forget some signs they have snuck up on the weekends and YES call code enforcement if you see one during the weekday.

No, I am not Dave Hardesty.

I saw 5 garage sale signs in a 7 block drive over on Tracy Blvd. They were flapping in the wind and taped to city poles. You can't read the addresses anyway so why do they put them there? The cheap flimsy paper and tape look trashy and I love the bright orangish one with such little writing you can't read it. This is mid-week and I'm sure they are over with. It is only going to get worse now that the weather is warming up. Those of you that do this, why don't you collect your signs when your garage sale is over and clean the tape off. You're all selfish and it makes Tracy look trashy. I am going to find out if you need special permission to pull these off since it looks as if it is OK to tape, tack or staple these signs anywhere without permission. You offenders should be ashamed of yourselves for being so lazy as to not collect them up. I bet you drive by them every day.

I think city workers have today off, tomorrow and Sunday. Someone please keep an eye on the signs and let me know what you see. I can get a hold of the right person to try and curb this. Including grocery carts. If you see someome walking off premmises with a grcery cart call the police because it is illegal. They are stealing.

If anyone has any other annoyong gripes that trash up Tracy, by all means lets add it to this list.
