Local jiu-jitsu instructor Charles Gracie and his cousin, Royce Gracie of Ultimate Fighting Championship fame, hosted sessions in the Brazilian style of the martial art on Friday, Feb. 17, at Charles Gracie Academy on Grant Line Road. Royce Gracie was the original champion of the mixed martial arts Ultimate Fighting Championships, and came to town to help promote the family’s martial arts tradition. Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which teaches how a smaller person can take the advantage over a larger and stronger opponent, originated 85 years ago in Rio de Janerio when Carlos and Helio Gracie and their brothers put their own techniques to the Asian fighting style. Charles and Royce Gracie are among the family members worldwide who pass on the tradition through academies and workshops.
