A fire in the glass processing equipment at the Owens-Illinois Glass Plant on Schulte Road caused minimal damage Wednesday afternoon.

As fire officials arrived on scene following the report of a structure fire at 14700 Schulte Road around 12:55 p.m., firefighters reported a large column of black smoke and heavy flames coming from the plant.

The fire reportedly started in some equipment inside the manufacturing area and spread vertically toward the roof, Tracy Fire Department Division Chief Dave Bramell said. The material burning was described as buildup of the oil or grease used in the glass melting process.

“Fire personnel did a recon and went up there and isolated the fire,” Bramell said. “It largely resolved itself once the material was consumed.”

Because the fire was isolated to one area, the plant reportedly stayed in operation during the firefighting process. Using dry chemical extinguishers and minimal water, firefighters had the fire out in less than an hour.

“Fortunately, there were no high (financial) loss and no injuries,” Bramell said.

Plant officials were unavailable for comment.

i will say this as someone you works there and helped put fire out. Not the fire departmet. like o-i 101 said it was smoke when they got there. i the tracy press should re-write this article and leave out "Using dry chemical extinguishers and minimal water, firefighters had the fire out in less than an hour." should say employees had fire contain when they arrived . if was the chief that gave story then shame on him WRONG. lovelytracy i truly believe you should zip it. but understand we tracy O-I came together to put fire out. and tell how me the government help get all machines and normal operations in hours. because all i seen was use give them ice for there cooler. chew on it

LovelyTracy, Here's a quote that seems to fit you to a T.

"Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt"?

LovelyTracy, I just want you to give us the name of the Republican and the quote where this person said "the private sector can do it all" whether or not they even included putting out fires?!?

LovelyTracy, you might want to look up what a "Straw Man" is before you create another argument that is so quickly and easily destroyed

"LovelyTracy" I take offense to that comment. My Mom worked out there for 20 plus years and it help put food on the table for my sisters and I as well as a roof over our heads. OI has been a great company to many residents in Tracy and it shows by the length of employment for a lot of the workers. OI has also given back a lot to the community.

"LovelyTracy" Sorry but no assistance was needed and Owens-Illinois had no issue putting out the fire on their own. So make sure you get your facts straight before you try condemn a supporting business to the Tracy community!

Not quite sure how they information was gathered for this story. I was one of the first ones on the scene and worked with co workers to extinguish the fire with all of O-I's fire equipment, and it was just smoke by the time the first fireman was in the plant. The O-I employees involved in this incident did a commendable job of reacting quickly and safely to prevent any injuries and damage to the O-I Tracy facility!

hmmm how funny looks like a private corporation needed government assisted help to put out the fire...

That's funny because I always hear republicans say the private sector can do it all, guess that doesn't include putting out there own fires!
